Core Mathematics is a post-16 Level 3 qualification aimed at students who have passed GCSE Maths pursuing A Levels and other vocational courses at schools and colleges. Core Maths is designed to support students in the mathematical elements of other subject areas, help students gain mathematical confidence in their own personal financial management and prepares them for the demands of the work place.

  • It is designed to improve the maths subject knowledge of non-specialist teachers by offering school-led teacher subject specialism training. It would suit non-specialist teachers who could potentially teach core maths in addition to their main subject and also for teachers who wish to re-train or extend their current experience to teaching core maths.

  • It provides support to teachers wishing to return to the profession through access to subject specialism training.

  • Eight modules will be covered: Problem Solving, Number, Finance, Discrete Maths, Algebra, Graphs, Probability and Statistics.

  • Sessions include maths content and also ‘pedagogical content knowledge’.

  • The training will be extensive, running across the year from late September 2018 to June 2019.

  • Delivered at St Bede’s Catholic School and Sixth Form College, Lanchester, DH7 0RD.

  • We will offer a ‘blended’ learning experience:

  • 1 initial twilight session and 4 full face to face Saturday sessions of high quality instruction, facilitated by outstanding maths teachers/Core Maths Lead/Lead Practitioners;

  • Comprehensive E-Learning provided by the ‘Centre for Innovation in Maths Teaching’ at Plymouth University with Masters Level credits - worth £942.
